Howdy is an informal greeting, commonly thought to have originated as a shortened form of the greeting "How do ye?" It was first recorded as part of Southern U.S. dialect in 1840.
It is typically associated with a Southern American accent, especially from Texas, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina, Mississippi, and the northern parts of Louisiana and Florida where the Southern dialect is predominate. It is the official greeting of Texas A&M University. Howdy in more recent usage has also come to be used as an informal farewell.
In Texas, Howdy is a colloquial contraction of the formal greeting of "How Do You Do?", and as such is a formal and acceptable greeting for residents of that region.
